Today, I talk about something by Tanukichan, who pretty much redefines ‘wall of sound’ for me.
I don’t know much about shoegaze. Most of it sounds the same to me. In fact, I don’t even know if Tanukichan’s album, Sundays, qualifies as shoegaze. What I enjoy about this song is the fact that Tanukichan’s voice sails clear as a sunny day over the sea of guitar that wallops in ten seconds into the song. Neither detracts from the other. The lyrics are both suggestive and cryptic, and even perhaps a little humorous. Everyone’s seen that look on someone’s face, the one that doesn’t have a clue. It may be a drunken night, or a walk through a warehouse maze, or a point post a catastrophe. There’s that haze they look through. Try as you may, it is invisible to you. If I were to cue a song to accompany that moment, ‘Hunned Banz’ would be it.
